Ever wondered why sodium is stored in kerosene and never in water? To find out the answer, watch this interesting science experiment video hosted on our BYJU’S - Class 9 & 10 channel.
In this online class, your favourite BYJU’S educator, Aishwarya Ma’am, conducts a small Science experiment to show you what happens when sodium is stored in the water!
CAUTION: Do not try this experiment at home.
This experiment must be performed only with adult supervision, and all appropriate safety precautions should be taken while performing the experiment.
Metal oxide and hydrogen gas are formed when metals react with water.
Metal oxides that dissolve in the water further dissolve to form metal hydroxide.
But not all metals react the same when in contact with water.
For instance, placing a piece of sodium metal in water results in a violent and explosive reaction.
This is because when sodium is immersed in water, it donates an electron to hydrogen ions in the water molecule.
This leads to the emission of heat and the creation of hydrogen gas, thus, causing an explosive reaction.
So then, can Sodium be kept in the open air? No, Sodium cannot be kept in the open air as well.
Sodium when kept in the open air, reacts with the oxygen and water vapour present in the atmosphere.
This produces sodium oxides and sodium hydroxides, which is again a highly exothermic reaction.
Because sodium cannot be kept in the open air or in water, it is stored in kerosene.
Sodium immersed in kerosene oil doesn’t catch fire.
Moreover, as the density of sodium is higher than that of kerosene, it does not react with kerosene.
