LYNYRD SKYNYRD FACTS
-Pronounced LEN-erd SKIN-erd.
-Formed in Jacksonville, FL with the name “My Backyard” in 1964.
-Changed their name to “Lynyrd Skynyrd” in 1969.
-The band popularized the Southern rock genre with “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Free Bird”
-The band released five studio albums and one live album between 1973-1977.
-On October 20, 1977 the chartered airplane the band was on crashed killing Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, and backup singer Cassie Gains (sister to Steve Gains).
The rest of the band were all seriously injured.
-Ranked No.
95 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of “100 Greatest Artists of All Time”.
-Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame March 13, 2006.
