SONA 2024 | SONA receives mixed reactions

  • After high expectations, there have been mixed reactions to last night's State of the Nation Address delivered by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The Congress of South African Trade Unions had hoped that the President would announce high impact interventions, including a massive expansion of the Presidential Employment Stimulus, to help break youth unemployment.
At the same time, the Institute for Economic Justice called for the value of the Child Support Grant to be restored to at least the food poverty line as a critical means of addressing child hunger.
Ramaphosa also said his first term was about rebuilding state institutions that were left broken after the era of state capture.

The President said stolen funds were being recovered, with courts issuing freezing orders to the tune of R14 billion for state capture-related cases.
For analysis of what came out of the SONA, we are joined virtually by Tax and Budget Policy Researcher at the Institute for Economic Justice, and COSATU President Zingiswa Losi.
    Good morning.
